Electric Vehicle FAQs

What does an EV cost to own?

Electric vehicle costs differ in light of various makes and models and are typically priced higher than internal combustion engine vehicles. According to the CBC, the price of a new EV vehicle in Canada ranges from $39,498 to $189,000, with $83,510 as the average cost.

Where will you charge your EV?

You can charge your EV at home using a Level 1 or Level 2 charger requiring a 120-volt charger or 240-volt charger, respectively. Level 2 is the faster home charging option. You can also take advantage of public charging stations in your area that offer quick charging and varying fees.

How long does it take to charge an EV?

It depends on the charging method you use and the type of EV you drive. For example, if you drive a PHEV, or plug-in electric hybrid vehicle, it will likely take four to five hours to charge your car with a Level 1 charger. A battery electric vehicle, or BEV, can take 40 to 50 hours to charge with Level 1. Charging a BEV with a Level 2 charger can take four to 10 hours. Public charging stations can charge your car in as little as 30 minutes.

Can roadside assistance help you if your EV runs out of battery power?

Many roadside assistance programs cover EV charging, so check your policy. If you are not currently enrolled in a roadside assistance program, ensure your selection covers EV charging before moving forward.

What is the electric vehicle tax credit?

If you buy a new plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV), you could qualify for a $5,000 credit according to the Canadian government.
